Artefacts

The Synod of St. Andrews in the early 17th century was a powerful beast, still in the throes of aligning Scotland to the new Protestant faith in the aftermath of the Reformation and the destruction fuelled by John Knox. In 1612 Sir Andrew Gray, 7th Lord of Fowlis, received a letter. It had been drawn to the notice of the Synod that there remained in the church of Fowlis Easter monumentes of idolatrie, and these should forthwith be obliterate.

Sir Andrew ignored it.

This is how it comes about that an unassuming rural church, in a small village on the Braes of the Carse of Gowrie, can still amaze us today with its wealth of 15th century sculpture, wood carving and, above all, paintings, the latter almost unique in Scotland.
